Sneaker Talk: Air Jordan 12 “Rising Sun”

The Air Jordan 12 “Rising Sun” looked like a pretty clean release when it arrived in 2009. White leather covered most of the shoe, with black and red used on the branding, heel, and inside. The patent leather mudguard added a little shine, but nothing about the colorway itself seemed all that controversial.

The story changed once people started paying attention to the insoles.

Air Jordan 12 Rising Sun with original, banned insoles.

Early pairs came with a Rising Sun flag graphic printed inside the shoe. That was where the problem started. In Japan, stepping on a national symbol can be viewed as disrespectful. But the bigger issue came from the history behind the flag itself.

The Rising Sun flag was used by the Japanese military during the country’s imperial expansion, and it still carries a painful meaning in places such as Korea and China. Because of that history, critics in parts of Asia have compared the way the symbol is viewed there to the way Nazi-era symbols are viewed in Europe.

That made the graphic inside the shoe a much bigger deal than Jordan Brand probably expected.

Before the wider release, Jordan Brand delayed the launch and changed the insoles. Stores that had already received pairs were reportedly told to send the original graphic insoles back, and plain white versions were used instead.

A few of the early pairs still got out. Some stores and online sellers reportedly sold them before the change was made, which is why versions with the original Rising Sun insoles are still out there today.

The connection also went deeper than the 2009 colorway. The Air Jordan 12 itself was partly inspired by Japan’s Rising Sun design. You can see it in the stitched lines across the upper, which spread outward from the mudguard.

That part of the design became a talking point again years later. In 2016, Korean professor Seo Kyoung-duk raised concerns about the Air Jordan 12 and its connection to Rising Sun imagery. He wrote to Michael Jordan, Tinker Hatfield, and then-Nike CEO Mark Parker about the issue. Nike later stopped selling the Air Jordan 12 in Korea.

Back in the U.S., the “Rising Sun” still built a following. It never became as popular as Air Jordan 12 releases like the “Nubuck” or “Melo,” but the clean white look made it easy to wear. It was also a solid basketball option at a time when plenty of people were still playing in Jordan 12s.

The Air Jordan 12 “Rising Sun” finally released on November 21, 2009, after the delay. More than 15 years later, Jordan Brand has yet to bring it back.

If it ever does return, the shoe itself could probably come back without many changes. The bigger question is the name. With everything tied to the original release, it would not be surprising to see Jordan Brand give a future version a different nickname.

For now, the Air Jordan 12 “Rising Sun” remains a one-time release, with original pairs still occasionally showing up on the resale market.

Air Jordan 12 Bucks “Idols Become Rivals” Releases September 12

The Air Jordan 12 “Bucks” is officially called “Idols Become Rivals” by Nike, and the story behind it is pretty easy to follow. Ray Allen grew up looking up to Michael Jordan, then years later found himself playing against him in the NBA. That connection carries over to the shoe, which clearly borrows from the Air Jordan 12 PE Allen wore during his time with the Milwaukee Bucks.

Allen’s original pair first surfaced in 2004 and has stayed high on the list for longtime Jordan collectors. Back then, player exclusives were much harder to see unless you caught them on court or in a rare photo. This new pair is not being sold as a Ray Allen retro, but anyone familiar with his Bucks PE will see where the look comes from.

White leather covers most of the upper, while deep Green wraps around the lower half of the shoe through the textured mudguard. Purple adds some color on the metallic eyelets, tongue branding, heel details, and the midfoot plate. Together, the colors give the shoe the same Bucks feel as Allen’s original pair.

The biggest difference is in the heel. Allen’s PE had his own custom lettering, while this version sticks with standard Jordan branding. Outside of that, the overall look stays close to the pair that helped inspire it.

The Air Jordan 12 “Bucks” will release on September 12, 2026 at select Jordan Brand retailers and SNKRS. Family sizing will be available, with the men’s pair priced at $215.

Air Jordan 11 “Green Screen” Celebrates 30 Years of Space Jam

Thirty years after Space Jam first hit theaters, Jordan Brand is going back to the movie’s production days for a new Air Jordan 11 “Green Screen.” The colorway takes its name from the green screen setup used during filming, when Michael Jordan shared the court with performers standing in for the Looney Tunes and Monstars before the animation was added later.

Michael Jordan filming the Space Jam basketball scene on a green screen with performers in green suits.

Nearly the entire shoe is covered in bright green. Instead of the usual ballistic mesh and patent leather, this pair uses suede and other tonal materials across the mudguard, tongue, eyelets, laces, and collar. The midsole is green too, giving the shoe a look that feels much closer to something from a movie set than a standard Air Jordan 11.

The outsole breaks up all that green with translucent glow-in-the-dark rubber and bright orange traction pods. Once the lights go out, the sole gives off a strong green glow, which plays right into the green screen theme without needing much explanation.

More Space Jam references show up in the smaller details. The insoles feature Michael Jordan stretching out for his game-winning dunk, with Bugs Bunny worked into the scene below. Tonal “23” branding lands on the heels, while the Jumpman logos blend into the green panels around the ankle.

Jordan Brand also gave the release its own special packaging. The bright green box mixes Jumpman branding with artwork inspired by the Monstars, while Tune Squad and Monstars logos appear across the front. Inside, a clapperboard graphic reads “SJ 30th” and references Michael Jordan and Bugs Bunny. Custom tissue paper is covered with sketches, characters, basketball graphics, and other nods to the film.

Air Jordan 11 Green Screen Release Date

The Air Jordan 11 “Green Screen” will release on November 14, 2026, through select Jordan Brand NBHD retailers for $255. The date lands just one day before Space Jam celebrates its 30th anniversary.

Nike Air Foamposite One “Phantom/Barely Volt” Glows in the Dark

The Nike Air Foamposite One “Phantom/Barely Volt” was first announced earlier this year, and we now have our first look at the upcoming colorway through official photos. The shoe stays true to the classic Foamposite shape, but the finish across the shell gives this release a much different feel than the usual solid-color pairs.

Phantom covers the molded upper, with a safari-like print worked across the shell in a slightly darker shade. The pattern is pretty subtle in regular lighting, but once the lights go down, the spots glow green across the shoe. The outsole glows too, making the effect even more noticeable in the dark.

Barely Volt adds small hits of color on the mini Swooshes, pull tabs, heel branding, and outsole. White laces and light suede around the eyestays keep the rest of the upper clean, while black carbon fiber breaks things up through the midfoot. Penny Hardaway’s “1 Cent” logo appears on the heel and outsole.

Nike Air Force 1 Low “Black Rat” Could Be Part of a Bigger Pack

Nike continues to deliver New York City inspired releases for the Air Force 1 Low. This upcoming “Black Rat” colorway is said to drop this fall and utilizes dark hues, fuzzy accents, and some NYC related nods.

Dark gray textured leather makes up the majority of the upper while brown faux fur is used on the Swoosh, collar, and heel tab. Fur even makes its way onto the laces to give the shoe a fuzzier and more rugged appearance.

The city inspiration continues on the tongue with bold “NYC” branding. Hidden in the fur of the heel is a red eye graphic as another subtle detail relating back to rats.

Brownish “AIR” branding is found down the midsole and a muted reddish-pink translucent outsole can be found beneath. Metallic lace dubrae are the final detail on the shoe.

The “Black Rat” will be one of two colorways in a rat-themed AF1 pack that will also include the “MTA MetroCard” variant.

The Nike Air Force 1 Low “Black Rat” is slated for a Fall 2026 drop on Nike.com and at select Nike Sportswear retailers.

This Under Armour D. Fox 3 Is Made For A “Gamer”

Returning for a third straight signature model, the “Gamer” theme lands on De’Aaron Fox’s Under Armour D. Fox 3. After similar versions of the D. Fox 1 and D. Fox 2, this year’s colorway mixes light blue, black, hot pink, and neon green.

Light blue does most of the work across the upper, running through the toe, sidewalls, and collar. Black cuts through the center of the shoe and covers the large molded side panels, tongue, laces, and heel structure. The contrast is pretty sharp from above, where the black tongue and lace setup sits between the blue sections on each side.

Small details carry the gaming theme without taking over the whole shoe. Fox’s logo appears on the tongue in neon green, while the tongue itself features a subtle pattern made up of familiar controller-style symbols. The black laces are also threaded with small pink and green hits, tying them back to the brighter colors used underfoot.

Hot pink takes over the forefoot section of the midsole and continues onto a large portion of the outsole. From there, the midsole fades into black toward the heel, creating a noticeable gradient along the side. Neon green appears inside the cushioning windows at the forefoot and heel, with another hit on the Under Armour logo near the back.

The outsole keeps the same color split seen from the side. Pink traction covers the front half, while black handles the heel, separated by a bright green section through the middle. Fox branding is worked into that center piece, giving the bottom of the shoe another detail connected to his signature line.

Under Armour also uses contrasting branding on the insoles, with Fox’s mark on one shoe and the UA logo on the other. Blue lining around the collar finishes the upper and keeps the color story consistent from the outside in.

The Under Armour D. Fox 3 “Gamer” will release September 4, 2026, in adult and grade school sizing. Retail is set at $125 for men’s pairs and $90 for GS.

Nike Zoom Vomero 5 “Gridiron” Goes Heavy With Chrome

Fall 2026 will bring another Nike Zoom Vomero 5 into the mix, this time in a “Gridiron” colorway built almost entirely around shades of grey. Stealth and Wolf Grey cover most of the shoe, with Metallic Silver worked in across the upper to keep it from feeling too flat.

Mesh makes up the base around the toe, sides, and collar, with synthetic overlays layered over it. The midfoot cage blends into the upper in grey, and the Metallic Silver Swooshes stand out more because of it. The same finish also appears around the eyestays, toe, and heel.

Grey laces run through the striped tongue loops, with Vomero 5 branding sitting at the top. Around back, the model keeps its usual geometric heel piece, finished in grey beneath a silver overlay and small Swoosh.

The color blocking gets darker underfoot. A grey Cushlon midsole sits above the segmented outsole, with Zoom Air cushioning built in. Gridiron shows up along portions of the heel and outsole, breaking up the lighter grey sections without introducing another color.

The Nike Zoom Vomero 5 “Gridiron” comes in Stealth, Gridiron, Wolf Grey, and Metallic Silver. Look for it to release in Fall 2026 through Nike.com and select retailers for $170.

adidas Harden 10 “CGA” Is a China-Exclusive Release

Made only for China, this Harden 10 sticks mostly to purple, with lighter violet shades across the shell and a few small hits of Laser Blue. adidas lists the colorway as Blessing Powder, Laser Blue, and Purple, though the finish looks a little different depending on the light.

Most of the upper is covered in a glossy purple shell with molded ripple lines stretching from the toe through the sides. Those raised patterns catch the light differently across the surface, shifting between soft lavender, violet, and deeper blue-purple shades depending on the angle.

Black covers the tongue, laces, inner bootie, and collar, keeping the top of the shoe much darker than the shell below. Small Laser Blue hits show up near the forefoot and heel, while a purple sole keeps the color blocking consistent underfoot.

The adidas Harden 10 “CGA” is available now exclusively in China through adidas and select retailers in-store and online. The pair comes in unisex sizing with a retail price of $160.

Satou Sabally Gets Lavender adidas Crazy Energy “Uni” PE

Satou Sabally is getting another adidas Crazy Energy release, just a month after her mango orange pair showed up. This time, the Phoenix Mercury forward gets a lavender colorway that fades almost completely to white by the heel.

The adidas Crazy Energy Satou Sabally “Uni” PE starts with soft purple across the toe, then gradually lightens through the midfoot. The fade keeps going into the back of the shoe, where white takes over around the heel and dimpled ankle collar. Rather than breaking the color up across separate sections, adidas lets the gradient run through most of the upper.

A custom lion graphic appears on the insole, giving Sabally’s pair its main personal detail without adding much extra branding to the outside.

Sabally has already worn more than one version of the Crazy Energy, and adidas has been putting the model on a steady PE run. Jalen Williams received an Oklahoma City Thunder pair, Chelsea Gray opened the WNBA season in a championship-themed version, and Sophie Cunningham has also been given her own colorway.

The lavender pair keeps things much simpler than some of those earlier releases. Most of the look comes from the purple-to-white fade, with the lion graphic doing the rest of the personalization.

The adidas Crazy Energy Satou Sabally “Uni” PE releases September 1, 2026 through adidas and select retailers in-store and online. The retail price is set at $110.

Air Jordan 8 “Chrome” Returns August 29th

The Air Jordan 8 “Chrome” is officially returning for Fall 2026, more than a decade after its last release. The sneaker, originally released in 2003 before making a comeback in 2015, is one of the most beloved colorways of the Jordan 8. This cool toned color palette perfectly fuses the early-2000s nostalgia of the AJ 8s retro silhouette with the premium materials and fit that modern Jordans are made of.

In true Air Jordan 8 fashion, the upcoming retro will come equipped with a high quality black nubuck upper with chrome colored hardware on the strap buckles and midsole. Shades of grey will also be used for the chenille tongue logo and mudguard accents. As for the trademark details, there will also be the classic cross straps and perforated overlays to inject the shoe with the signature ’90s hype that is synonymous with the Air Jordan 8. Every element on the “Chrome” colorway pays homage to the OG AJ 8s that helped Michael Jordan win his third consecutive NBA championship in 1993.

Although it was not an original colorway for the Air Jordan 8, these “Chrome” 8s quickly gained a cult following in the years since they first hit the market for their clean and timeless aesthetic that can be dressed up or down to complement just about any streetwear or court look. The 2026 reissue of the “Chrome” 8s comes more accurate to the OG in both fit and shape.

Ja Morant Reveals Nike Ja 4 By You Customization Options

Ja Morant gave an early look at the Nike Ja 4 By You through Instagram Stories, confirming that his latest signature shoe will be added to Nike’s customization platform.

Four different Ja 4 designs were shown, with green and pink doing most of the work across Morant’s personal pairs. The setup also appears to let users change the left and right shoes separately, which opens the door for mismatched colorways. One of the examples uses different marbled outsoles, while another brings a black pattern over a white upper.

Nike has not shown the full set of customization options yet, so it is still unclear how much of the shoe can be changed. Colors, materials and smaller details will likely vary once the model officially goes live on Nike By You.

A release date for the Nike Ja 4 By You has yet to be announced.

Detailed Look at the New Balance 983

UPDATE 8/28/26: New detailed images of the New Balance 983 have been shared by brand designer @flyin_asparagus. A release date still hasn’t been announced, but the shoe is expected to arrive sometime in late 2026 or early 2027.

Original Story 7/11/26:
New Balance is adding the 983 to its lifestyle lineup, and the early look puts it somewhere near the 9060 without turning it into a direct follow-up. The connection is mostly underfoot. A wide, sculpted sole bends around oversized ABZORB pods, giving the model a bulky shape that immediately stands out.

Three colorways have surfaced so far. One pairs muted blue synthetic overlays with dark grey mesh, finished with lavender inside the cushioning units. Grey laces, lining and heel panels keep the palette fairly restrained, even with the glossy pieces running across the upper.

The tan pair shifts closer to the New Balance look most people already know. Light brown suede covers the upper alongside off-white underlays, grey sections and faded green around the eyelets and heel. Pale blue pods show through the neutral sole and add a small bit of contrast.

Red mesh and shiny overlays make the third colorway the brightest of the group. Softer pink appears near the collar and heel, while grey laces and lining break up the stronger colors. Blue-tinted cushioning units sit inside the red midsole.

Oversized “N” branding, oval mesh windows and the same molded ABZORB sole carry across all three versions. New Balance has not confirmed official color names, pricing or a release date for the 983. The model is expected to arrive in late 2026 or early 2027 through NewBalance.com and select retailers.

The Willy Chavarria x UGG Collection releases September 10, 2026 through Willy Chavarria, UGG, and select retailers in-store and online. Prices are $190 for the Hotel Slipper, $250 for the Otzo Clog, $450 for the Relaxed, $500 for the Biker, and $800 for the Guard Boot.

Steph Curry Li-Ning PE Sneakers Set for Limited China Tour Release

Steph Curry hasn’t unveiled his first Li-Ning signature shoe yet, but a few of the pairs he wore while testing the sneaker market are headed for a limited release. The group includes four Way of Wade 12 colorways along with a black Jimmy Butler 4.

The Way of Wade 12 lineup includes black, white, pale pink, and teal versions, all built around mostly tonal uppers. Curry’s newly reworked logo appears on the tongue and heel, giving each pair a clear tie to his new chapter with Li-Ning without changing the base model itself.

Curry also wore the black Jimmy Butler 4 during his free agency run. That pair is part of the upcoming group as well, with the colorway linked to Jimmy Butler’s “Batman” comparison involving the Warriors roster.

Li-Ning has yet to unveil Curry’s first signature basketball model, so these releases serve as an early look at how his branding will be used across the company’s existing performance shoes. His updated logo previously appeared on a golf PE before showing up on these basketball pairs.

The Steph Curry x Li-Ning PE collection is expected to release in limited quantities during Curry’s China tour in September 2026, which runs from September 9th-14th, with stops in Beijing, Dongguan, Shenzhen, and Hong Kong.

JENNIE x adidas Superstar Ballet Releases September 1st

UPDATE 8/28/26: JENNIE and adidas have officially announced the Superstar Square Ballet, releasing September 1st on adidas.com. The ballet-inspired shoe is part of JENNIE’s first adidas Originals collection, with new campaign images added below.

Original Story 8/20/26:
JENNIE has been around adidas for a while, but now she finally has a shoe tied directly to her name. The JENNIE x adidas Superstar Square Ballet takes the Superstar in a completely different direction, swapping its usual sneaker shape for something closer to a ballet flat.

The shape is where most of the changes happen. adidas keeps the Superstar shell toe, then flattens and squares it off for a wider look up front. The usual lacing setup has also been removed. An elastic strap crosses the midfoot, with a small bow near the toe giving the shoe its clearest ballet reference.

So far, two black-and-white pairs have surfaced. One comes in Off White/Core Black-Core White, using a light base with black Three Stripes and matching accents. The other flips the palette with a Core Black/Core Black-Off White finish. A stitched label inside pairs JENNIE branding with the adidas Originals Trefoil.

The Superstar Square Ballet fits into adidas’ recent run of ballet-inspired women’s footwear, though this one starts with a much more recognizable base. JENNIE has also appeared in early campaign imagery wearing black-and-white adidas gear while performing ballet, which lines up with the direction of the shoe.

The JENNIE x adidas Superstar Square Ballet is scheduled to release September 1, 2026.
