Every Air Jordan retro changes a little from one release to the next, even when Jordan Brand is trying to stay close to the original. Those small differences in shape, color, materials, and branding are part of what collectors have always paid attention to, especially when an older colorway comes back again.

The Air Jordan 7 “Playoffs”, also widely known as the “Raptors,” is one of the better examples. Michael Jordan wore the original 1992 pair during Chicago’s run to a second straight championship, but the 2002 retro ended up giving the colorway a different identity. That release used brighter red and purple accents with a darker upper, which helped the “Raptors” nickname catch on years after the Toronto franchise had already entered the league.

Each version since then has looked a little different. The 2009 DMP release brought more grey back into the upper, while the 2012 pair returned to a mostly black look. The upcoming 2027 version moves closer to the original 1992 color blocking with a black and grey upper and softer purple accents, making it less similar to the brighter 2002 retro many people associate with the “Raptors” name.

The 2027 release will mark the fifth time the Air Jordan 7 “Playoffs” has been offered. It is scheduled to return February 20, 2027 during NBA All-Star Weekend in Phoenix.
