With the city of Detroit on the brink of bankruptcy and a complete state takeover, hope seems to be lost. Once the fourth-largest city in the country with over two million people has now lost more than 237,000 residents, including 185,000 blacks and about 41,000 whites. Some blame crime, racial tensions, globalization, poor schools, and the economy definitely doesn’t help the situation.
But with all negativity Detroit seems to receive from everywhere, their still is hope. Documentary filmakers Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady are shining light on the situation with the documentary Detropia, which appeared at Sundance film festival too much praise.
Detropia follows the lives of several Detroiters including an owner of a blues bar, a young blogger, a union auto rep, a group of young artists, an opera, and gang of illegal scrappers, who haven’t given up and are trying to survive in the city during tough times.
