The Nike Book 2 “George Raveling” takes a quieter, more emotional direction. This pair honors George Raveling, a respected coach and key figure in Nike’s early basketball legacy. His influence helped shape the brand’s future and guide Michael Jordan toward Beaverton. The tribute feels thoughtful, not performative.

Small details carry the story forward. A silhouette of Coach Raveling appears on the insoles, while “RAV” lands on the heel in Gothic script. The cream and black palette keeps the look grounded. It reflects restraint, which suits the subject matter.

The shoe also introduces new construction choices. Flat synthetic uppers replace traditional materials, while jagged stitching separates the mudguard.

Nike is honoring George Raveling, a Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer and the first African American head coach in the Pac-8, with the start of George Raveling Week on January 21st. The tribute begins at Villanova with a screening of the Unraveling George documentary at the Connelly Center, held in partnership with director Mike Tollin. The celebration continues on January 28th during the USC vs. Iowa game, followed by January 31st events at Washington State vs. Portland and Howard vs. Norfolk State.
