While the New Balance 990v7 hasn’t officially launched yet, we’re already getting a look at a second colorway coming in “Black.” The early photos come from The Washington Post, which recently visited a New Balance factory in Boston and got a closer look at the upcoming model.
The 990 series has been around since 1982, and there’s plenty of history behind it. New Balance has a particularly strong following in the DMV area, where the 99x models have been popular for decades. The shoes also became familiar outside of running through Steve Jobs, who wore earlier New Balance models before making the 992 his regular choice. The 990 is still part of the brand’s Made in USA lineup.
As for the Black version, most of the shoe comes covered in dark tones, with reflective silver “N” logos on the sides. There’s some matching silver around the ABZORB cushioning units, too. Nothing too flashy here, just a darker take on the new 990 with a few reflective details mixed in.
Grey has always been closely tied to the 990, dating back to the original release in 1982. New Balance went with the neutral color when brighter running shoes were common, and it stuck. The same Grey colorway will lead the 990v7 launch before other versions begin rolling out.
While we wait for release details on the New Balance 990v7 “Black,” the debut “Grey” pair is scheduled to launch November 6, 2026. Expect the Black version to follow, although an exact date hasn’t been announced.
