New Balance will release the 983 on October 1, 2026, with this grey pair landing alongside the “Shadow Blue” colorway already worn by Coco Gauff. There’s some 9060 DNA in the bulky shape and layered sole, but the 983 goes its own way with a different build and a more rounded cushioning setup.
The upper sticks with a familiar New Balance mix of mesh and suede. Grey covers most of the shoe, while muted green panels run around the toe, eyelets, and heel. Darker grey hits on the “N” logos, outsole, and a few smaller details keep the palette from looking too washed out.
Underfoot is where the 983 really separates itself. A dual-density midsole houses three visible ABZORB pods, creating a rounded, segmented shape through the forefoot and heel. The rear of the shoe is especially pronounced, with a large exposed pod sitting below the glossy heel counter. It gives the 983 a heavier look from the back than most of the brand’s traditional runners.
The outsole is also broken into separate rubber sections instead of using one continuous piece. That, along with the visible cushioning, gives the shoe more of a modern lifestyle feel even though the upper still pulls from the grey-heavy New Balance look people already know.
New Balance first showed the model in “Shadow Blue,” a darker blue-based colorway worn by Coco Gauff. This grey version is more restrained and probably the easier read for anyone used to seeing the brand in neutral tones.
The New Balance 983 Grey releases October 1, 2026, alongside the “Shadow Blue” colorway. Retail is set at $160.
