The New Balance 2010 “Pastel Pink” does not come off delicate once you look at it. The color is soft, sure, but the shape still has that chunky runner attitude that gives the shoe bite. Pastel pink suede moves across the upper, while black synthetic sections and open mesh fill in the base with a darker, sportier feel. The pale green “N” logo lands in the middle with grey trim around it, and that detail helps break things up. White laces and the light inner lining also keep the whole shoe from looking too dark or too busy.

That’s where the color play starts to pick up steam. The creamy yellow overlay provides a faded effect without feeling phony or contrived here. Translucent green heel pods pop up at the rear and the light blue around the heel prevents this shoe from diving headfirst into the familiar pink-and-black territory. Black rubber appears on the foot underfoot on the outsole. You also see splashes of lime and another hit of blue, so all the colors introduced are used throughout the shoe. Simple. It all works together without trying too hard.

There’s that early-2000’s runner feel to this shoe. Yet it still feels modern enough to wear all-day. There’s a lot happening color-wise, but thankfully the shoe never feels too out of balance. Easily the best part about it.
