After a hard-to-get New York City debut earlier this summer, the Jalen Brunson x Nike Kobe 5 Protro “NY vs. NY” is coming back for a broader local release. The first launch was tied to special NBA Finals activations, leaving most buyers with only a small window to track down a pair.

Nike introduced the colorway through a pop-up across from Madison Square Garden and a Foot Locker truck built around the release. That limited setup made the shoe one of the tougher Nike Basketball drops of the summer, especially with Brunson drawing even more attention during New York’s postseason run.

The design is rooted in NY vs. NY, Nike’s annual tournament built around several of the city’s best-known outdoor basketball leagues. Bringing that theme to the Kobe 5 Protro connects the shoe to New York streetball while also reflecting how far Kobe Bryant’s influence still reaches beyond the NBA.

This next round should give more local buyers a chance, though the release is still expected to be limited. The Jalen Brunson x Nike Kobe 5 Protro “NY vs. NY” will release August 4, 2026, for $190 through select New York City retailers, including Foot Locker, with raffles and in-store events expected.
