Angelo Baque is giving sneaker fans a look inside the Awake NY archives. Following the announcement of his involvement with the new Jordan Design Studio, the Awake NY founder revealed an unreleased sample from the brand’s Air Jordan 5 collaboration.
The alternate pair takes a much brighter approach than the versions that reached stores. White leather covers most of the upper, while teal accents appear across the midsole and other details. Awake NY has not shared the story behind the colorway, although the combination naturally brings the Statue of Liberty and its weathered green finish to mind.
Several details also suggest the shoe was produced early in the design process. Awake’s slanted “A” logo is stitched directly onto the ankle area instead of being worked into the Air Jordan 5’s side netting like the retail pairs.
Baque also shared an unused version of the upcoming Awake NY x Air Jordan 6. That sample replaces the slanted “A” with Awake’s crown logo near the ankle. The crown-branded design was also created for the pink colorway.
The samples arrived alongside news that Baque will help lead Jordan Brand’s Jordan Design Studio, an initiative focused on mentoring and developing younger creatives. Baque said he looks forward to sharing ideas and helping the next generation of designers bring their work to life.
Union Los Angeles founder Chris Gibbs is also involved with the Jordan Design Studio. For now, both Awake samples remain unreleased, offering a rare look at ideas that were considered before the final collaborations were completed.
