The Air Jordan 3 was originally released in 1988 and was the first Air Jordan designed by legend, Tinker Hatfield. It showcased the introduction of the Jumpman logo, elephant print and visible air on the midsole. Becoming one of the most iconic shoe’s ever, the Air Jordan 3 also included more Nike branding than its predecessor by introducing the infamous “Nike Air” on the heels.

The introduction of Mars Blackman (Spike Lee) into the Air Jordan advertising campaign also started with the Air Jordan 3. Partnering with advertising agency Wieden + Kennedy, this still stands as the greatest sneaker marketing initiative of all-time.

It was the 1988 NBA Slam Dunk Contest to really put Michael Jordan and the Air Jordan 3 on the map as he went head-to-head against Dominique Wilkins. That particular night, the Jumpman logo was born, as MJ soared from the free throw line to slam home the contest-winning dunk wearing the “White Cement” Air Jordan 3s. That was later followed by Michael Jordan debuting the “Black Cement” pair during the All-Star Game. He lead the East to a 138-133 victory, while putting up a game-high 40 points and was awarded his first All-Star MVP.

For 2018, Jordan Brand will be celebrating their 30th Anniversary of the Air Jordan 3, which they’ll be kicking it off with the highly anticipated return of the Air Jordan 3 OG “Black Cement” in February. For March, there will also be two Air Jordan 3 Retro SE colorways releasing in Anthracite/Summit White and Midnight Navy/Summit White color options.
