West NYC is bringing back the adidas Rod Laver in white and pink, pairing a straightforward colorway with a campaign that is far more suggestive than the shoe itself. The Upper West Side retailer pulled from the cheeky, provocative style of older advertising for the release.
The collaboration continues a Rod Laver series rooted in the neighborhood. West NYC previously tied an orange edition to Zabar’s, giving that pair an obvious Upper West Side connection. This one keeps the local angle but changes the tone completely.
White mesh uppers account for most of the upper, save for the hot pink accents on the heel tab and outsole. There aren’t any significant construction updates nor bonus design elements other than the color change. The attention remains on Rod Laver’s recognizable silhouette.
New York street comedian @ollyybee stars in the 20-second commercial, where his size 12 sneakers attract a few lingering looks. The joke is not subtle, but that is clearly the point of the campaign.
