The Whitaker Group continues its mission with the opening of Social Status Detroit, a new cultural hub on Detroit’s east side.
Located at 9101 E Jefferson Ave, Unit A, this $5.5 million project turns a historic building into a modern, multi-use destination. Inside, the space features a Social Status retail store, a community lounge called beSocial, and a take-out food counter.
Outdoors, a half-court basketball space painted by artist Nina Chanel Abney brings energy and art together. The bright, mural-covered court adds to Detroit’s creative spirit while offering a place to play and gather.
This project is part of TWG’s $51 million investment in historically Black communities. Alongside this, efforts like A Ma Maniére Beach in South Carolina and The Collective in Charlotte continue to shape TWG’s legacy.
Founder James Whitner sees the store as more than a place to shop. It’s designed as a platform for the community to connect, grow, and be inspired. Social Status Detroit stands for empowerment, style, and purpose.
The grand opening will take place on April 24th at 7 PM, celebrating the space’s arrival and its promise for the city.
In conclusion, Social Status Detroit offers more than sneakers—it brings people together through art, culture, and shared purpose. This new space is set to make a lasting mark on the Motor City’s east side.
