The Air Jordan 17 “Doernbecher” brings one of Jordan Brand’s most elusive models back into the spotlight, and this year’s designer, Zach Rumbaugh, delivers a pair with real emotional weight. The program has produced a lot of signature Jordans we remember fondly over the years, but I feel like this one has something extra going on for me. The Air Jordan 17 is not one that typically sees a high return, and it is near the top of a lot of collectors’ nostalgia lists.

Zach is an 18-year-old boy from Oregon that survived sudden cardiac arrest due to a rare heart defect. He ended up in the hospital for 38 days which became a running motif throughout the design. His pair blends personal symbols with cues pulled from his love of fixing bikes and cars, creating a look that feels bold without drifting into costume territory.

The upper uses a shifting purple finish reminiscent of custom paint, paired with carbon fiber textures and a quilted collar. Metallic bolts along the eyelets echo motorcycle hardware, while the removable shroud brings back a signature element from the original model. Small details like the cat graphic on the toe bring his personality into relation to MJ’s “Black Cat” nickname. The glow-in-the-dark outsole adds a bit of fun flair without being overkill.

The National Civil Rights Museum is located in the former Lorraine Motel, which is where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated in 1968. The significance of that fact is deeply tied to the legacy of the motel, which was previously a common place for African Americans to stay while traveling in a time of segregation. The site itself also became the former motel’s tragic place of transition from a home for families and a business for workers to a symbol of mourning for a nation. Given these factors and James’ history of financially supporting the museum’s preservation and maintenance of its educational role in the culture, this release holds more significance than other releases in the “social-impact” category.
