Hassan Martin scored 19 points to lead the Jordan Brand Classic’s Regional home team past the away team 114-102 today at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. DeAndre Bembry put up 26 points for the Regional Black team to lead all scorers.

This year’s Regional Game featured 20 of the top prep basketball players from New York City and surrounding areas, with the vast majority verbally committed to schools including Georgetown, UConn, Syracuse, Miami, St. Joseph’s and Illinois.

After getting off to a commanding start and holding a narrow lead at halftime, the away team couldn’t keep pace at the end in a game that saw seven lead changes and 12 players score in double digits.

Martin (Rhode Island) was named team MVP and led the way for the home team, but was followed closely by Jonathan Severe (undecided) with 16 points and Jaquan Lynch (Florida International) with 13.

For the away team, Bembry (St. Joseph’s) was named MVP, and added nine rebounds and three assists to his impressive stat line. In addition, Tyler Roberson (Syracuse) and Michael Young (Pittsburgh) each scored 19 points.

Jamal Murray & Lorvo Mazalin Jordan Brand Classic International Game MVPs

Jamal Murray of Canada scored 16 of his game-high 24 points in the second half, but his International White Team came up just short as the International Black Team hung on for a 76-72 victory during the 7th annual Jordan Brand Classic International Game at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY.

The game, which featured the top 16-and-under players from outside of the U.S., saw five ties and four lead changes as both teams battled through the 40-minute contest. The Black International team jumped out to an 11-point first quarter lead before the white team settled in to draw within a basket at the end of the 3rd quarter.

For the Black Team, Lorvo Mazalin of Croatia scored 12 points to go along with eight rebounds and a steal on his way to team MVP honors. Thon Maker of Australia added 12 points and four rebounds to the winning effort. Andrea Latorre (Italy) and Luc Loubaki (France) joined Mazalan and Maker as the only other players on the team in double figures, scoring 10 points each.

The White team also had four players in double figures. In addition to Murray’s 24, Cheick Diallo (Mali) added 12 points and Georgio Papagiannis (Greece) and Wesley Silva (Brazil) each had 10.

Nike Cuts Ties With Several Small Locations

Nike is giving the boot to several small, local retailers. Without explanation.

CBS3 first reported Friday afternoon that the athletic wear company told select area stores that as of June 30, their accounts are being cut off. The reason why remains unclear.

Business owners throughout the Philadelphia and Camden regions have received emails from the sporting apparel and footwear company saying that the retailer is “exercising its right to terminate your accounts.” It’s unknown whether Nike is taking the same approach with stores in other cities.

Keith Sherman, store manager of the three Real McCoy Athletic Footwear locations throughout the region (in Olney, on Cecil B. Moore Avenue and in Camden), says Nike products account for 75 to 80 percent of his store’s sales. “Those numbers are staggering,” he said over the phone Friday.

Even more mysterious is the manner in which Nike is handling the situation.

“We had scheduled a meeting at the Nike Headquarters in Portland, Oregon with our sales rep,” Sherman said. “And that meeting was canceled that day — they wouldn’t even see us,” he added. The account termination email arrived in store owner William Chung’s inbox shortly after the canceled meeting in Portland. The notice listed “no reasons whatsoever” as to why Nike was severing ties with the shop. Sherman says Real McCoy Athletic Footwear has been doing “good business” with Nike for over 23 years.

Currently, small “mom-and-pop” shops like Top Shoes, Center City Sports and Shoe Plus are among the only known stores affected.

Nike said in a statement released to CBS3:

“Nike is constantly evaluating its distribution needs with a view to enhancing its brand. This includes adapting our distribution strategy to the changes in our consumers’ purchasing behavior, the retail landscape, and our brand strategy.”

Nike did not return our request for comment on Friday. More to come.

North Carolina Unveils New Football Uniforms at Spring Game

The University of North Carolina, together with Nike, unveiled a new collection of football uniform designs and colors for the 2013 season at today’s Spring Game. The new uniforms feature Nike Pro Combat technology and the design inspiration speaks to Tar Heel football history. Overall, the updated look reflects the program’s progressive outlook on the game of football.

The Tar Heels will have three jersey options available in 2013, including a Carolina blue top with black numbers, a white jersey with black numbers and a black jersey with Carolina blue numbers. Carolina has three pant options including Carolina blue, white and black.

Nike’s design team worked closely with Tar Heel coaches and student athletes to understand their unique approach to the game, taking inspiration from the Ram mascot, who has appeared with painted blue horns at every game since the early 1920s. The Carolina blue top and white pant will continue as the traditional home uniform. The away uniform is a streamlined look in all white, and the program chose to let the iconic Carolina Blue stand out on an all-black alternate uniform. A new customized font and typeface also serves a functional purpose as they are easier to read and more visible downfield. The stripes on the uniform pant and shoulders reflect the lines of ram horns.

UNC head football coach Larry Fedora reminds his athletes to be “smart, fast and physical” on every play. This mantra is embroidered on the back neckline of the jersey to reinforce Coach’s message to the athletes as they suit up before each game.

“Our kids are excited about the new uniforms,” said Fedora. “When they saw them for the first time they got fired up about wearing them this year. We wanted to design a uniform that connected our team to The Tar Pit, our name for the student section.”

The fully integrated uniform system incorporates the latest in performance innovation. The athlete’s baselayer works in concert with his entire uniform – true innovation from the inside out. Lightweight padding is integrated directly into crucial “hit zones” in the baselayer. Performance features include integrated Flywire technology in the neckline for reduced weight and lockdown fit over pads. Additionally, increased sleeve articulation provides better range of motion, and four-way stretch fabrication delivers a streamlined shrink-wrap fit. The design enables speed without compromise.

The Tar Heels will wear the all-black uniforms against Miami on Thursday, Oct. 17, at Kenan Stadium.
