Inside Access: Nike Kobe 9 Elite Low

Kobe Bryant demands provocative design innovation. Aesthetics aside, his appetite for the most revolutionary footwear technologies, materials and fit have fueled a special connection with Nike designer Eric Avar. The two have pushed the limits for a decade, with their vision coming full circle with the KOBE 9 Elite Low and special muses inspiring each colorway.

Reverting to a higher cut for the first time since the KOBE 3 in 2007, Bryant’s ninth shoe challenged convention when it launched last December. The KOBE 9 Elite Low version debuts in new colorways beginning July 12, with innovation and inspiration that will change summer basketball.

DESIGN GENESIS

The KOBE 9 Elite Low is Bryant’s most innovative shoe to-date, featuring three leading technologies: Flyknit, Flywire and Lunarlon. Flyknit provides a lightweight, breathable solution for a summer basketball shoe that performs equally well indoors or outdoors.

“Nike Flyknit acts as a super skin, giving athletes articulated strength similar to the engineering of a spider web – tension and strength just where they’re needed,” said Eric Avar, Nike VP of Innovation.

Flyknit and Flywire technologies are a one-two punch, leading to a dynamic fit for intricate, on-court footwork. Eliminating bulk and distraction was a focus for Avar with disciplined design in a low cut with no distractions.

PURPOSEFUL

Flyknit technology introduces a new way to create a shoe upper out of what is essentially yarns. It drastically reduces waste from the upper with a low cut and efficient production process compared to traditional methods.

INSPIRATION

The KOBE 9 Elite Low brings Bryant’s muses to life. The artistry of music and its ability to move and inspire people has always intrigued the athlete. From classical to pop, he has appreciation for multiple genres.

The KOBE 9 Elite Low Hyper Grape is linked to music and its ability to transcend the decades, with artists, songs and dance moves that stand the test of time. The purple upper pays homage to pop music and includes a moon surface graphic on the outsole.

The KOBE 9 Elite Low Beethoven pays tribute to the German composer and pianist, and more specifically the power of his Ninth Symphony from the early 1800s. The grey color of this colorway represents Beethoven’s timeless quality.

The KOBE 9 Elite Low Hyper Grape releases on July 12, while the KOBE 9 Elite Low Beethoven debuts August 16; both globally at Nike.com and select retail locations.

Nike #BETRUE 2014 Collection

Nike is proud to announce the 2014 #BETRUE Collection of uniquely designed footwear and apparel that is inspired by the LGBT community, and celebrates the passion and pursuit of sport by all athletes. This year’s collection includes the Nike Free 5.0 and Nike Free OG, as well as the Nike SB Zoom Janoski. The signature #BETRUE T-shirt anchors the apparel pieces, with the addition of a #BETRUE tank and #BETRUE City Pack T-shirts that highlight the energy of #BETRUE in four cities across the United States.

The #BETRUE collection features rainbow colors as a reflection of the diversity within sports and Nike’s support for the LGBT community. The 2014 collection also continues to build on the #BETRUE print that launched in 2013, with an update to the bold geometric shapes and a unique pattern with the words “Be True” embedded in the print.

“We are a company committed to diversity, inclusion and unleashing human potential,” said Tim Hershey, Nike Vice President of Global Merchandising and Executive Chair of Nike’s LGBT & Friends Employee Network. “Nike believes if you have a body you are an athlete and we’re delighted that #BETRUE is becoming a call-to-action for all athletes to be their most authentic selves.”

NIKE FREE RUN 5.0 AND OG #BETRUE

In honor of the 10th anniversary of Nike Free, the 2014 #BETRUE collection includes both the Nike Free Run 5.0 and the Nike Free OG to celebrate the full spectrum of an athlete’s pursuit of sport—from performance to lifestyle. The Nike Free 5.0 features a reflective #BETRUE tribal print, which includes the words “Be True” among the bold patterns and shapes that compose the unique print. Nike Flywire on the 5.0 also reflects the color line in the gradient of the rainbow, and the sockliner and shoelaces also highlight #BETRUE. Both models create a rainbow between the left and right shoes when looking at the pair from multiple perspectives–front, back and above.

NIKE SB ZOOM JANOSKI

Professional skateboarder Stefan Janoski is one of several Nike elite athletes showing their support for #BeTrue in June. Janoski has lent his Be True signature to his signature shoe, the Nike SB Zoom Janoski. His hand-drawn Be True signatures on white canvas paper were turned into a rainbow print pattern for the upper, with no two pairs of the Nike SB Zoom Janoski #BETRUE exactly alike.

Air Jordan 11 Low “Black Snake” Custom

The Air Jordan 11 Low “Green Snake” to most sneakerheads could have been design better. Some would say just by adding a Black midsole would have made a world difference (check the custom pair out). Others like “me” would have scratched that idea and went with a pair similar to this Air Jordan 11 Low “Black Snake” Custom.

Designed by Jeremy Sandbakken, this Air Jordan 11 Low still incorporates a snakeskin overlay, but is just totally Blacked out with minor Volt accents on the tongues and outsole.

Peep out the full photo below and let us know what you think in the comments. Do you agree with us that this would make for a sick release, or do you disagree?
