A photographer is suing Nike for violating the copyright of the iconic 1984 Jumpman logo photo, saying his use of a photo was the inspiration to the legendary Jumpman logo (below photo).
The lawsuit says Nike paid photographer Rentmeester $150 in August 1984 for temporary use of two 35mm transparencies of Jordan he shot for Life magazine, later returning the images lest the company be charged an additional $500.
Rentmeester contacted Nike upon learning of its image and “Nike initially refused to speak with Mr. Rentmeester regarding the issue,” the lawsuit says, “and only responded to his repeated requests when Mr. Rentmeester threatened litigation.”
The lawsuit says Nike paid Rentmeester $15,000 in March 1985 for a limited license to use the image of the soaring Jordan for two years.
But Nike exceeded the agreement in marketing materials as well as creating, in 1987, the Jumpman logo — a silhouette inspired by the soaring image, the lawsuit says.

Jordan Brand plans to waste no time by kicking off the new year with a few brand new Air Jordan remastered releases, like the Air Jordan 7 Retro “French Blue” colorway.
In 2015, Jordan Brand will be celebrating their 23rd anniversary of the Air Jordan 7, as well as their 30th anniversary of the Air Jordan. Kicking things off will be the debut of the Air Jordan 7 “French Blue” that was originally released in 2002.
The remastered retro version of the Air Jordan 7 “French Blue” features an all-White tumbled high quality leather upper with French Blue and Flint Grey accents.
You’ll be able to find the Air Jordan 7 “French Blue” 2015 available for purchase on Saturday, January 24th, 2015 and will be available in full-family sizing at select Jordan Brand retailers, including Nike.com and Wish ATL.

The adidas Superstar is celebrating its 45th anniversary as well as the 10 year anniversary since the shoe has been part of the Consortium family.
