Jordan Brand has unveiled one of its most exclusive Air Jordan projects with the EKIN x Air Jordan 1 Low “Never Not Working”. Created solely for Nike’s internal EKIN program, the pair never enters retail circulation and remains locked behind the brand’s inner circle.

The project celebrates the 40th anniversary of the Air Jordan 1 while spotlighting the people who helped build its legacy off the court. EKINs have represented Nike at the grassroots level since 1981, carrying product stories city to city. This release becomes the first EKIN-exclusive Air Jordan and the sixth EKIN shoe overall.

Visually, the sneaker balances restraint with meaning. A black, sail, and EKIN Orange palette reflects long travel days that begin before sunrise and end well after dark. Distressed leather Swooshes and a sail midsole add a worn-in feel that mirrors years of constant movement rather than factory freshness.

Details drive the story forward. “Never Not Working” appears on the tongue in handwritten script inspired by Michael Jordan’s signature. Each pair is individually numbered out of just 200, instantly placing it among the rarest Air Jordan 1 Lows produced. Mismatched heel embroidery features the Wings logo on one shoe and the EKIN mark on the other.

Additional nods are spotted on the lace aglets, featuring “1981” and “1984,” in reference to EKIN’s birth year and the Air Jordan 1s initial release. While louder has certainly been cool of late, the arrival of this more neutral effort reminds us of the silhouette’s fundamental purpose-driven sensibility that is ultimately grounded in the early-90s cross-training zeitgeist that birthed it.

Released first in 1992, the Air Trainer Huarache was a game changer in the realm of lockdown support as it introduced the idea of a neoprene bootie and a midfoot strap. This updated version does little to diverge from that formula, and it’s clear that the design is still fresh and relevant thirty years later. It also doesn’t feel nearly as reigned in as some of the recent neutral retros, but it is expressive in its own right without ever feeling untethered from the heritage.

The upper is presented in a deep Challenge Red suede that envelops the foot for an intentionally uniform look that avoids feeling like overkill. Black accents on the strap, underlays, and heel counter ground the color pop. Light speckling across the midsole and a soft, dusty red outsole add visual interest and texture.

No flashy or “hypey” fare here, ALD and New Balance headed up north to document a wintry road trip across the frozen Oslo Fjord. The short film eschews the typical launch fodder from the jump.

Shot between Norway and Sweden, the project follows a custom Aimé Leon Dore x New Balance boat cutting through frozen water. The pace stays slow and deliberate. That restraint mirrors ALD’s recent design language, which continues to favor confidence over noise.

The film also introduces the second Made in UK Aimé Leon Dore x New Balance 991. Early looks reveal a colorway shaped by nautical travel and winter light. Muted tones echo the surrounding sea and sky, while premium materials keep the execution grounded in New Balance heritage.
