Missy Miller is one of ten siblings. When she was five years old, her big sister Laurie died from a brainstem tumor. That sister happened to be one of the first Freestyle designers. The Miller family faced a new and unexpected health crisis the summer of 2013 when Missy experienced strong heart palpitations while away at camp. The palpitations went away, but kept coming back, so her parents took her to the doctor in September. A blood test revealed that she had type I diabetes. The doctor also sent her for an echocardiogram at the hospital in Salem, but the results were unclear. So they went to Doernbecher where Laurie had been treated and where they had great confidence in the doctors and staff. The Doernbecher team did another echocardiogram and then an MRI to confirm what they saw. She had an atrial septum defect, otherwise known as having a hole in the heart. With dreams of bright lights and big cities, she is poised and ready.
Missy’s canvas is the Women’s Nike Free 5.0 in her favorite colors, paired with a Swoosh as bright as her personality. On each tongue are two logos: A hand icon represents the finger pricks that help Missy keep her diabetes under control, and initials to honor her sister’s memory. The NYC skyline is a huge inspiration, printed on the sockliner to remind Missy that the Big Apple is at her feet, and is also on the back of the Nike Free 5.0, where Missy dreams of seeing her name in lights one day.
The Nike Women’s Free 5.0 Doernbecher release date has been rescheduled to debut on Saturday, December 6, 2014 at select retailers like Nike.com.
