Nike SNKRS App Introduces SNKRS Maps Feature

Nike’s SNKRS App is adding a new feature called SNKRS Maps, giving sneaker fans a smarter way to connect with retailers.

SNKRS Maps, as it’s called, will be an interactive store locator. You’ll be able to find tier-zero locations like Undefeated, Kith, and Extra Butter—but Maps will also spotlight local sneaker stores and regional boutiques. There’s an obvious value in being able to check where major retailers are, but I really like that Nike isn’t losing sight of local retailers. The SNKRS App is a great place to find pairs on release day, but this map makes it easy for collectors to find trusted, in-person retailers where they can buy authentic pairs any day of the year.

Maps is just one of the ways Nike has iterated on the SNKRS App since its launch in 2015. The App has always been the place for most hypebeast-friendly releases of limited Jordans, Dunks, and collaborations, but now it’s expanded to incorporate storytelling elements that have built its own culture and sub-community. Sneakerheads can learn about the design process through behind-the-scenes videos, and SNKRS sometimes even lets users decide which sneakers Nike should work on next through polls. Maps, then, seems like a logical addition.

Micro-opinion: I really like this feature. Sneaker culture is inextricably linked to community, and a lot of that community is defined by local retailers. By adding a new locator feature to the SNKRS App, Nike’s just making sneaker collecting more convenient without losing that essential authenticity. Plus, it could be a way to help direct attention to smaller retailers that get lost in the hype machine, which is a nice change of pace.

The Nike SNKRS App is available for free on both iOS and Android.
