Flames are nothing new in skateboarding, though this Nike SB Dunk Low keeps them mostly out of sight. The upcoming “Saffron Quartz” pair relies on its unusual color blocking first, then saves the louder artwork for a few smaller details.
The upper shifts through three colors from toe to heel. Muted green covers the front, a washed yellow fills the middle, and a brighter yellow takes over around the back. Black laces, Swooshes, tongues, and lining keep the mix from feeling too busy.
The fire theme shows up across the heel, where the embroidered Nike logo is finished with flame-like edges. Inside, the insoles feature an open mouth shooting out a long burst of fire. It is a strange detail, but one that fits comfortably within Nike SB’s history of playful graphics and offbeat concepts.
The green-and-yellow palette may also remind longtime collectors of older SB Dunks such as the “Puff N Stuff,” “Newcastle,” and “Vapor,” even though this pair takes a different approach.
