In celebration of the 15 year anniversary of the Doernbecher Freestyle collection, Nike will be reintroducing classic past releases.
To kick off the celebration, Jacob Burris’s Nike Air Max 95 from 2015 will be making an official return. Jacob was a 14-year old who loved to plays baseball, practices the drums, and plays with his pet hamster Jamal. But on the inside, a Dacron tube holds his aorta together and keeps his heart pumping strong. His rare heart condition has earned Jacob the nickname ‘The Bionic Boy’ from his family. It’s also inspired him to raise awareness about heart health.
A junior in high school now, Jacob is the vice president of his own nonprofit, Jacob’s Heart Story, that advocates for heart health awareness. He’s gone to Washington, D.C., to share his story with members of Congress. Jacob says Freestyle helped him own his medical journey. When he was first diagnosed, he wanted his life to be normal, but his experience in the program helped him to be proud of his differences.
