New Balance is reaching pretty deep into its Made in USA catalog for the 2040v5. The 2040 name has been around since 2012, and this fifth version brings it back as one of the more expensive shoes currently coming out of the brand’s U.S.-made program.

That was part of the appeal of the 2040 from the beginning. It wasn’t really meant to sit alongside a standard New Balance lifestyle release. The shoe occupied the higher end of the lineup, and the 2040v5 picks up from there with premium materials and quite a bit of performance tech packed underneath.

Nubuck makes up the upper, while a full-length carbon fiber plate runs underfoot. New Balance also combines FuelCell, ABZORB SBS, and ENCAP cushioning, pulling together technology from different eras of its running catalog.

Then there’s the price. At $400, the New Balance Made in USA 2040v5 costs considerably more than most of the brand’s everyday sneakers and lands firmly at the premium end of the current lineup.

Rather than chasing whatever is popular in footwear right now, New Balance says the 2040v5 was built around craftsmanship, materials, and performance. That leaves it in an interesting spot: part technical runner, part high-end Made in USA lifestyle shoe.

The New Balance Made in USA 2040v5 releases in North America on August 20, 2026, through New Balance and select retailers. A wider global launch follows in May 2027. Unisex sizing will be available for $400.
