LeBron James seriously considered walking away from basketball before deciding there was still enough left for one final run. Instead of retiring, the NBA’s all-time leading scorer will begin the next chapter of his career with the Philadelphia 76ers.

James announced the move ahead of his record-setting 24th season, ending an eight-year stretch with the Los Angeles Lakers. He admitted that retirement felt likely once last season ended, but time away from the court changed his outlook. The love for basketball was still there, along with the desire to compete for another championship.

Philadelphia gave him the opportunity he was looking for. James made it clear that the decision was not driven by money or family considerations. At this stage of his career, he wanted another chance to work, sacrifice and play meaningful basketball for a contender.

The move adds another major name to a Sixers roster already built around Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey. Philadelphia also features Jaylen Brown and VJ Edgecombe, giving the team a loaded starting group that should immediately enter the championship discussion.

James thanked Los Angeles while also recognizing the lasting connections he built in Miami and Northeast Ohio. Philadelphia will become the fourth franchise of his career and, according to James, his final NBA destination.

Whether his final stop ends with a fifth championship remains unanswered. What is clear is that LeBron James believes he still has something left to give, and the last chapter of his career will be written in Philadelphia.
