“With the Hirsh, Greats advances its premise, and the idea of the “usable past,” by uniting two iconic styles- the Desert Boot and the classic running shoe- to realize something totally new.
In the world of design, blending an old style with new technology is a common concept, grounded in the comforting aesthetic of a previous generation to calm fears about the new.
The story of the Hirsh begins in the 1940’s. The world was at war, and one British infantryman, Nathan Clark, was stationed in Burma. He noticed local militarty men wearing a sand colored ankle boot on a crepe rubber sole. Not only did the simple shoe look good, it beat the crippling heat. Spotting these shoes was a light bulb moment for Clark, who returned home with a gift to his family business: the Desert Boot. For 70 years, the design has stood the test of time.
The Hirsh uses premium Italian cow suede sourced from Italy’s best tanneries for its upper. A traditional buffed EVA running sole with a Vibram gum rubber tread gives the sole both an appropriate ’80’s vibe with an unparalleled bang for your buck. These two elements are hand-made by Italian cobbers in Civitanova, Italy and finished with iconic stitch down construction.
Taking the best parts from the Desert Boot and EVA-equpped roadrunners, the Hirsh blends prep and sport-casual into a single silhouette.”
