The ASICS GEL-Kayano 14 “Illusion Blue” could’ve come out in 2011 and fit right in. Bright blue mesh sits underneath metallic silver leather overlays, bringing back the kind of colors you’d see on running shoes all the time back then. These days, it’s mostly grey, cream, and beige, so this one looks a little different.

Black appears on the inner lining and heel panel, breaking up the brighter colors throughout the shoe. The GEL cushioning also has a slightly yellowed tint, giving the midsole a somewhat aged look. Between the blue upper and silver detailing, there’s even a slight resemblance to Wolverine’s signature colors.

Running shoes with bold color combinations like this were everywhere about 15 years ago, long before retro runners became an everyday sneaker trend. The GEL-Kayano 14 originally debuted in 2008, and this upcoming release brings back some of that era’s more colorful styling. It’s a different look from the muted grey, cream, and beige versions that have become common across the model.
