This is one of those instance where a backstory wasn’t necessary because the shoe was dope enough on its own. While the colorway itself doesn’t really scream LOVE LETTER, there are hidden easter eggs that directly reference Michael Jordan’s farewell letter to basketball. Which one of those times? Who knows. Lol. I mean, he did retire like three times.
But stamped onto the medial collar of the left shoe are the words “With love and respect…” Those were the closing words in Jordan’s farewell letter to basketball. Behind the tongue, Mike describes how basketball became much bigger than simply a “sport” to him. Running the risk of undermining such a poignant sentiment, I really hope that this love letter was written after retirement number three. Otherwise it doesn’t pack as much of an emotional punch for me. I’m just saying. But the shoes are still clean though…
In terms of quality, the “Love Letter” Air Jordan Retro 1 High OG looks like it delivers. A combination of soft, off-white leather and contrasting shades of rich, brown nubuck make up the upper. And while you don’t wear the packaging, I think the added storytelling on the box is a nice touch. Makes it feel slightly more elevated and worth the price.
