The Air Jordan 1 High OG “Rebellionaire” arrived in March 2022 with a design pulled from one of the oldest stories connected to Michael Jordan and Nike. Rather than remake another black-and-red Jordan 1, the release went back to the “Banned” era and used the story in a different way.

What actually happened in 1984 has gotten blurred over time. Jordan wore a black-and-red Nike Air Ship that did not meet the NBA’s uniform rules, although the Air Jordan 1 later became the shoe most closely connected to the story. Nike ran with it in its advertising and turned the league controversy into part of the identity surrounding Jordan’s new signature line.

The Rebellionaire skips the expected “Bred” color blocking altogether. Black and grey leather cover the shoe in a layout close to the original “Shadow” Jordan 1, but almost every panel has writing printed across it.

“They Can’t Stop You From Wearing Them” repeats throughout the upper, a line tied back to the advertising Nike used during Jordan’s early years with the company. There is also a red “X” stamped on the heel, which brings another piece of the old “Banned” theme into the design.

Its name follows the same story. “Rebellionaire” plays off the rebellious image attached to Jordan during those early Nike campaigns and what eventually became a billion-dollar business around his name.
