Designed by Peter Moore, the Air Jordan 1 was released during Michael Jordan’s sophomore season with the Chicago Bulls. The shoe went on to sell a whopping $162 million in the first year of its existence with Michael Jordan earning a reported 5% on all Jordan Brand sales in his licensing deal with Nike.
Two of the original releases from 1985 were the “Black Toe” and “Royal” colorways, which are arguably two of the most notable OG releases from 1985-present.
The Air Jordan 1 “Black Toe” colorway grew in popularity after being featured in several Nike promotional campaigns (including the photo that inspired the Jordan logo itself). Last seen in 2016, the shoe returned in original form.
The Air Jordan 1 “Royal” ditched the popular Black and Red from the original “Bred” (Banned) release for Black and Blue. The shoe was debuted my Michael Jordan for a Nike poster that was taken by Chuck Kohn. They were also never worn on the court by MJ himself. Last seen in 2017, the “Royal” Air Jordan 1 will be getting the “Reimagined” treatment for Holiday 2023.
