adidas’ 3D-printed footwear program is moving onto the hardwood with the BB.01, its first basketball shoe built around the technology. The model falls under Project R.A.P., or Radical Athlete Perception, a wider performance push that uses additive manufacturing to create sport-specific footwear instead of treating 3D printing as a one-category experiment.

First shown during March Madness, the adidas BB.01 centers on a printed midsole made to handle impact while keeping players stable through cuts and landings. The darker sections underfoot help show where adidas focused the high-impact zones, giving the tooling a more functional look than a traditional foam setup.

Inspiration from recent adidas Harden shoes appears to play into the silhouette, particularly the padded inner bootie and molded outer shell. The 3D-printed cage envelops the shoe and features an open lattice construction on the sides of the shoe, which will likely allow for ventilation while also giving the BB.01 its signature look. Outsole pattern features angled linework rather than something more chaotic.

Weight may be the main performance tradeoff. The BB.01 is listed at roughly 15.13 ounces, or 428 grams, making it heavier than many of today’s top basketball shoes. That does not take away from the tech story, but it does position the shoe more as an early look at where adidas Basketball could be headed with 3D printing.

Project R.A.P. already extends beyond hoops, with adidas also revealing a 3D-printed soccer cleat earlier this year and a 3D-printed American football cleat in development.

The adidas BB.01 releases July 14, 2026 via adidas CONFIRMED, with registration opening July 9. The official landing page is available now on adidas.com.
