New Balance 991 “Houndstooth” Pairs Black Leather With Checks

Published on

Brown and tan houndstooth covers the spots where you’d usually find mesh on the New Balance 991. On this Made in England pair, black leather wraps around the patterned fabric, which looks more like material from a wool coat than something you’d expect on a running shoe.

Houndstooth stretches across the toe box and beneath the laces, then appears again around the collar. The leather surrounding it varies in texture, from a smooth toe overlay to more visibly pebbled side panels. Black laces and tonal “N” logos blend into the upper, leaving most of the contrast to the fabric.

Tan lining extends around the collar and edges of the tongue, which carries a black embroidered 991 patch. A grey midsole sits underneath, with visible cushioning windows and black rubber along the bottom.

The 991 previously wore houndstooth in a 2021 release alongside the 1500, both featuring Harris Tweed. Whether that same fabric returns here remains unconfirmed, so the resemblance alone doesn’t establish a connection.

The New Balance 991 “Houndstooth” is expected to arrive during Holiday 2026 at NewBalance.com and select retailers.
